  You can have a wealth of information on your web site, but if the general user does not understand your navigation system, they may never get to your sales page, or information brochure. Therefore, catering to the lowest common denominator in your target demographic is extremely important. You may have to sacrifice some elements of your design to ensure ease of use.
• Browser Standards Compliance
  
  Currently Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the number one browser used by about 75% of internet users. However, Internet Explorer is not renowned for being compliant to the Worldwide Web Consortium guidelines for browser compatibility.The other two major browsers used by another 20% of users are Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari. An experienced designer will develop their sites to be compatible with Firefox, and then make changes (hacks) to ensure compatibility with Internet Explorer and other web browsers. If your website supports these three browsers then you will be compatible with 98% of internet users.
• Speed
  
  While it is important to have your site hosted on a fast server, if your images are very large and/or you utilise a lot of AdobeFlash™, you may have trouble keeping dial-up users online.
